Sudanese Army and Resistance break the siege of Kadugli
#SudanUpdate: Children in the town of Diling pick corn kernels and seeds off the ground to eat as the the world’s worst hunger crisis intensifies in Sudan. Hunger in Dilling, Kadugli & Elfashir has reportedly reached unbearable levels due the RSF blockades on the areas, with no food or humanitarian assistance being able to enter. Famine levels reached level 5 in various areas of Sudan last year, with MSF aid workers at Zamzam IDP camp detailing how a child died every 2 hours of malnutrition. Across Sudan, millions are currently being supported by ERR community kitchens or “takya”. The kitchens are run by grass-roots neighborhood-based mutual aid groups that were formed from the neighborhood resistance committees that led the protests of the 2018-19 revolution. These groups have carried out the bulk of humanitarian aid and assistance across the country as it battles with the worlds worst humanitarian and hunger crises. Many highlight that these groups draw their members from “a vibrant pro-democracy movement,” and build on ideas drawing from what they call “a rich heritage” of social solidarity, best illustrated in the age-old tradition of “nafeer.” Loosely translating to a “call to mobilize” the tradition is rooted in community action and has been used for centuries as a response to humanitarian disasters and other difficulties.
