Al-Marghinaani | المرغيناني Bismillah # [Biography of al-Marghinaani](https://hanafiyyah.com/articles/biographies/scholars/05-century/marghinaani) # Name and Lineage His name is Burhaan ad-Deen Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Abi Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Jaleel ibn al-Khaleel ibn Abi Bakr as-Siddeeqi, with the lineage going back to Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him). And he is famous with the attributions al-Farghaani, al-Marghinaani, ar-Rishdaani. These are all attributed to Farghanah, a large district and extensive province in Transoxiana, in what is now the Republic of Uzbekistan. Marghinaan was one of the most prominent cities of Farghanah. It is now known as Margilan, bordering Turkestan. Al-Rishdaani is a nisbah to Rishdaan, a village among the villages of Marghinaan. Imam Al-Marghinaani was born shortly after the 'Asr prayer on Monday, the 8th of Rajab, 511 AH. Az-Zarkali in al-'Alaam placed his birth in 530 AH, however this is a clear error. And Allaah knows best. # His Teachers and Students ## Teachers Imam al-Marghinaani studied the various sciences, especially Fiqh, under a number of the leading scholars of his time. He traveled to learn from them, received knowledge from many of them directly, heard hadith from them, and was granted authorization by them. Allaah also granted him the opportunity to perform the Hajj in 544 AH and to visit the mosque of the Prophet (peace be upon him) During that journey, he met a number of the leading scholars in the Two Holy Sanctuaries. Az-Zarnuji, one of the students of al-Marghinaani, transmitted from his shaykh that he said: > "How many great shaykhs I met, yet I never questioned them." [ تعليم المتعلم فى طريق التعلم ] Imam al-Marghinaani compiled for himself a register in which he recorded his teachers, their names and biographies according to the method of the scholars of Hadeeth. From among these eminent scholars are: 1- His father, Abu Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Jaleel al-Marghinaani 2- His maternal grandfather, al-Qaadhi 'Umar ibn Habeeb az-Zarandramashi 3- 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Isbijaabi (d. 535 AH), author of Sharh Mukhtasar at-Tahaawi 4- As-Sadr ash-Shaheed 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azeez ibn Mazah (d. 536 AH). 5- Najm ad-Deen 'Umar ibn Muhammad an-Nasafi (d. 537 AH) 6- Qaadhi Khan Al-Hasan ibn Mansoor al-Uzjandi (d. 592 AH), as mentioned by al-Halabi. He said, "He studied Fiqh under him." 7- 'Uthman ibn 'Ali al-Baykandi. As for his studies in Hadeeth, he studied under the Hadeeth scholar Shaykh al-Islam Dhiya' ad-Deen Abu Muhammad Sa'eed ibn As'ad al-Marghinaani, and Dhaahir ad-Deen Abu al-Mahasin al-Hasan ibn 'Ali al-Marghinaani. ## Students As for his students and those who studied under him and gained expertise in Fiqh through him, they were exceedingly numerous, making it difficult to enumerate them all. Among those who benefited greatly from him, completed their legal training under him, and transmitted al-Hidayah from him to later generations was Imam Shams al-Aimmah Muhammad ibn Abd as-Sattar al-Kardari, known as Khawaharzadah (d. 642 AH). Other well known students are: 1- Dhaheer ad-Deen Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad as-Samarqandi (d. 553 AH) 2- His first son, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Marghinaani. 3- His second son, 'Umar ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Marghinaani. 4- His third son, 'Imaad ad-Deen ibn 'Ali al-Marghinaani These sons are all mentioned as having studied under their father, and gained mastery in Fiqh through him. All three are renowned scholars in their own regard. 5- Burhaan al-Islam az-Zarnuji, the author of 'Ta'leem al-Mut'allim'. 6- Majd ad-Deen Muhammad ibn Mahmood al-Ustrushani (d. 632 AH) 7- Mahmood ibn al-Husayn al-Ustrushani, the father of the aforementioned Majd ad-Deen. And others. # His Works ## 01- Bidayah al-Mubtadi Bidayah al-Mubtadi is a collection of Mukhtasar al-Qudoori and al-Jaami' as-Sagheer of imam Muhammad. This text better organized and clearer to understand, easier for the reader. Al-Marghinaani also corrected some of the errors that exist in al-Qooduri, while also adding several rules that were omitted in the Mukhtasar. ## 02- Al-Tajnees wa'l Mazeed wa Huwa li-Ahl al-Fatwa Ghayr 'Aneed It is a collection of verdicts of the Hanafi madhhab on issues where the later Hanafi jurists expressed their opinions and derived rulings, matters that had not been explicitly addressed by the earlier scholars of the madhhab. The author states in the introduction: > "This book was written to present the rulings derived by the later scholars which were not explicitly mentioned by the earlier scholars, except for those few cases that had been transmitted from them." ## 03- Az-Ziyadaat Although the biographers did not explicitly mention this among the books of al-Marghinaani, al-Marghinaani himself has mentioned this in multiple places and refers to it in al-Hidayah. From what he said about this topic, it appears this book contained the legal issues with their evidences, and went into depth of the various legal matters. ## 04- Sharh al-Jaami' al-Kabeer An explanation of the book of imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan. ## 05- 'Uddah an-Naasik Fi 'Iddah al-Manaasik Not much is known about it, except the name of the book likely gives us an idea that it was related to the rites of Hajj. ## 06- Faraa'id al-'Uthmaani Al-Marghinaani had an old teacher who was a scholar in the Shaafi'i madhhab who was called 'Uthmaan. He wrote a book on the rulings related to inheritance, however he was unable to finish it as he passed away. Al-Marghinaani then took it upon himself, and completed the book for his shaykh. ## 07- Kifayah al-Muntaha' Fi Sharh Bidayah al-Mubtad This is a monumental work and an extensive commentary on Bidayat al-Mubtadi. It contains numerous legal issues, rare evidences, and detailed discussions. Al-Marghinaani in the introduction of al-Hidayah said: > "I had promised in the introduction to Bidayat al-Mubtadi that, with Allaah's help, I would write a commentary entitled Kifayah al-Muntaha. I began composing it, and a promise deserves to be fulfilled as much as possible. However, whenever I was about to complete it, I realized that it had become somewhat lengthy. I feared that its excessive length would cause people to abandon the book. Therefore, I redirected my efforts toward another commentary, which I named al-Hidayah..." In al-Hidayah, al-Marghinaani refers readers to Kifayah al-Muntaha in more than twenty places. He does so whenever he wishes to direct the reader to a fuller or more comprehensive discussion, a longer and complete explanation of an issue, additional rulings and uncommon cases, rare evidences, or a broader reference to the opinion of the Hanafi jurists and the leading scholars. Al-Lucknawi copied that it was in approximately 80 volumes. Unfortunately, this book is now considered lost, as authorities such as Badr ad-Deen al-'Ayni, Haaji Khaleefah, and others have mentioned that this book is nowhere to be found in Ar-Rum (Anatolia), Syria, Egypt, or Iraq. It was said it may be found in India, however no copy of it exists there either. ## 08- Mu'jam Shuyookh al-Marghinaani Al-Qurashi refers to this work by the title "Mu'jam Shuyookh al-Marghinaani", while Az-Zarnuji refers to it as "Mashaykhah". In this work, al-Marghinaani compiled the names of the scholars from whom he studied, whom he met, and from whom he transmitted knowledge. He assembled it for his own use, recording their names and narrating ahadeeth through their chains of transmission. He also documented the ijazahs (authorizations) granted to him by his teachers, what he narrated from them, and even preserved elegant and refined poetry transmitted through them. All of this is evident from the passages al-Qurashi quotes from the work in al-Jawahir al-Mudhiyyah, material that is not found elsewhere. ## 09- Muntaqa' al-Marfoo' Not much is known about it, and some doubted whether it was truly his work or not. ## 10- Nashr al-Madhhab Not much is known about this work either, however the scholars have mentioned it. ## 11- Al-Hidayah Sharh Bidayah al-Mubtadi This is the most famous of the books of Al-Marghinaani. It is one of the most relied upon, widely circulated, read, and cared for books of the Hanafis by those who came after him. It is said: > كتاب الهداية يهدي إلى الهدى ... إلى طالبيه ويجلو العمى > فلازمه واحفظه يا ذا الحجا ... فمن ناله نال أقصى المنى > Kitab al-Hidayah guides to guidance ... to those who seek it, and removes blindness. > So cling to it and memorize it, O man of understanding ... for whoever attains it has attained the ultimate desire. As-Sighnaaqi said about al-Hidayah in his own Sharh 'al-Nihayah': > "Among the books of the earlier and later scholars, and among the works of the insightful and discerning, the star of al-Hidayah shines forth, guiding to the foundational transmissions and the authoritative texts. Despite the brevity of its wording, it conveys profound meanings, combines the branches of jurisprudence, and exhibits sound composition." > "It rose radiant and preeminent, yet it speaks with an eloquent conciseness that is almost miraculous. Its principles unfold into various subsidiary rulings, and its jurisprudential maxims yield an abundance of meanings. The pens of authors fall short on counting its merits, and volumes of manuscripts cannot fully describe its treasures." Al-Lucknawi said: > "All of his works are accepted and relied upon, especially al-Hidayah, for it has always remained a point of reference for the learned and an object of study for the scholars." Even today, the end of a Hanafi students' journey will be at the stop of al-Hidayah. The author of Kashf adh-Dhunoon mentioned a large number of commentaries on al-Hidayah, annotations on it, and hadeeth compilations, exceeding sixty commentaries. The most famous commentary is of Ibn al-Hummam titled, "Fath al-Qadeer". The hadeeth compilations "Nasb ar-Rayah" of Az-Zayla'i and "Ad-Dirayah" of Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalaani are also well known. They recognized that he surpassed both his teachers and his peers, and they unanimously testified to his knowledge and scholarly excellence. Al-Marghinaani himself said: > "I only surpassed my peers because I never experienced any interruption in seeking knowledge." The eminent hadeeth scholar Ibn al-Mustawfi al-Mubarak ibn Ahmad al-Lakhmi al-Irbili (d. 637 AH), said describing Imam al-Marghinaani: > "He was among the foremost Hanafi scholars, a master of hadeeth, an exegete of the Quraan, a meticulous verifier, a man of several works, and a mujtahid. He authored several works, the most famous of which are Bidayat al-Mubtadi and its commentary, al-Hidayah." [تاريخ اربل] 'Abd al-Qaadir al-Qurashi said: > "'Ali ibn Abi Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Jaleel al-Farghaani, Shaykh al-Islam, Burhan ad-Deen al-Marghiyani (the correct attribution is al-Marghinaani). He was the eminent scholar and meticulous jurist, the author of al-Hidayah. The people of Egypt acknowledged his excellence and precedence in knowledge, as did scholars such as Imam Fakhr ad-Deen Qaadhi Khan and Imam Zayn ad-Deen al-Attabi... He surpassed his teachers and contemporaries, and they all submitted to his scholarly excellence, especially after he authored al-Hidayah, Kifayah al-Muntaha and Nashr al-Madhhab, and he taught a large numbers of students." He copied from Jamal ad-Deen ibn Maalik, who was a renowned grammarian and linguist: > "The author of al-Hidayah, Imam al-Marghinaani, possessed knowledge of the eight sciences." [الجواهر المضية في طبقات الحنفية] By the eight sciences, he meant the disciplines through which one attains the rank of ijtihad. These are: 1- Knowledge of the Quraan. 2- Knowledge of the Sunnah. 3- Knowledge of Consensus (ijma). 4- Knowledge of Principles and Analogical Reasoning (Qiyaas). 5- Knowledge of definitions and proofs. 6- Knowledge of Arabic grammar, language, and morphology. 7- Knowledge of abrogating and abrogated texts, and the causes of revelation. 8- Knowledge of hadeeth criticism, including the science of praise and dispraise, and the conditions of the hadeeth transmitters. Al-Lucknawi said about him: > "He was an Imam, a jurist, a memorizer, a hadeeth scholar, an exegete, and a compiler of the various sciences. He was precise in the different fields of knowledge, accomplished, a meticulous researcher, an expert of deep investigation, ascetic and devout, outstanding, virtuous, skilled, a scholar of principles, a man of several works, and a poet. The eyes have not seen anyone like him in knowledge and excellence. He possessed a vast mastery in matters of disagreement, a deep expertise in the Hanafi madhhab, and he studied jurisprudence under the renowned leading Imams." [الفوائد البهية في تراجم الحنفية] Imam adh-Dhahabi said about Al-Marghinaani: > "The eminent scholar, and the scholar of Transoxiana ... And he was a vessel of knowledge, may Allaah have mercy on him." [سير أعلام النبلاء ] Ibn al-Hummam al-Hanafi in his [فتح القدير] said about him: > "The shaykh of the shuyookh of Islam." Ibn 'Aabideen said in his [شرح عقود رسم المفتي] > "The author of al-Hidayah is a distinguished Imam and one of the greatest scholars of the madhhab. He belonged to the rank of the scholars of Takhreej (to extract not explicitly addressed before) and Tarjeeh (Preferring an opinion). And plenty more can be said, but this is sufficient, all praise is due to Allaah. # His Death After a lifetime filled with knowledge and righteous deeds, he passed away, may Allaah have mercy on him, on the night of Tuesday, the 14th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 593 AH. May Allaah grant him an enduring legacy of truth among later generations. He was buried in Samarqand, in what is today the Republic of Uzbekistan. His grave remains visible and well known there. 'Abd al-Qaadir al-Qurashi said: > "A trustworthy companion of ours who traveled throughout the lands informed me that in Jakardizah, a large quarter of Samarqand known as Turbat al-Muhammadiyyeen, nearly four hundred people named Muhammad were buried. Each of them was a scholar who authored works, issued verdicts, and from whom large numbers of people acquired knowledge. Another person added that each of them was named Muhammad ibn Muhammad. The people of Samarqand gathered them together in this cemetery. When the eminent Imam, the author of al-Hidayah, passed away, they carried him to this cemetery intending to bury him there, but they were prevented from doing so. He was therefore buried nearby." Sanad Dalam Agama: Eksplorasi Ilmu Hadits dalam Menguji Pemahaman LDII Di antara aspek yang cukup dikenal dalam diskursus pendidikan Islam adalah keberadaan Sanad atau Isnad, yakni sebuah transmisi/mata rantai keguruan yang menjadi suatu jaminan atas keilmuan seseorang. Perkara ini cukup dikenal di dalam pembahasan pendidikan Islam, terutama kalangan tradisionalis. Sanad atau Isnad sebenarnya pertama muncul dalam dunia Hadits. Tradisi periwayatan dari perawi ini ke perawi itu sampai dengan Rasulullah ﷺ muncul pertama kali di era Tabi’in atau Tabi’ut Tabi’in, ketika muncul fitnah di kalangan kaum Muslimin, dan juga adanya upaya pemalsuan hadits. Maka untuk mengatasi perkara ini, maka diperlukanlah tradisi periwayatan dari satu orang yang mendengar dari orang lain dan orang lain ini mendengar dari orang lain lagi sampai ke sumber primer, dalam hal ini adalah Rasulullah ﷺ. Hal ini sebagaimana yang dikatakan oleh Ibnu Sirin sebagaimana yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Muslim: لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَسْأَلُونَ عَنِ الإِسْنَادِ، فَلَمَّا وَقَعَتِ الفِتْنَةُ قَالُوا: سَمُّوا لَنَا رِجَالَكُمْ، فَيُنْظَرُ إِلَى أَهْلِ السُّنَّةِ فَيُؤْخَذُ حَدِيثُهُمْ، وَيُنْظَرُ إِلَى أَهْلِ البِدَعِ فَلا يُؤْخَذُ حَدِيثُهُمْ "Dahulu mereka tidak pernah menanyakan tentang sanad. Namun, ketika terjadi fitnah (perpecahan umat), mereka berkata: Sebutkanlah kepada kami nama-nama perawi kalian. Lalu dilihatlah, jika mereka termasuk ahli sunnah maka hadisnya diambil, dan jika mereka termasuk ahli bid'ah maka hadisnya tidak diambil."\[1\] Imam Muslim sendiri membawakan pernyataan ini di dalam Muqaddimah Shahih beliau pada bab yang berjudul: بَاب بَيَانِ أَنَّ الإِسْنَادَ مِنَ الدِّينِ. وَأَنَّ الرِّوَايَةَ لَا تَكُونُ إِلَّا عَنِ الثِّقَاتِ. وَأَنَّ جَرْحَ الرُّوَاةِ بِمَا هُوَ فِيهِمْ جَائِزٌ، بَلْ وَاجِبٌ. وَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَ الْغِيبَةِ الْمُحَرَّمَةِ، بَلْ مِنَ الذَّبِّ عَنِ الشَّرِيعَةِ الْمُكَرَّمَةِ. "Bab penjelasan bahwa sanad adalah bagian dari agama, dan bahwa riwayat tidak boleh diambil kecuali dari orang-orang yang terpercaya (tsiqah), dan bahwa mengkritik para perawi (jarh) berdasarkan cacat yang ada pada diri mereka adalah hal yang diperbolehkan, bahkan wajib, serta hal tersebut bukanlah termasuk ghibah yang diharamkan, melainkan termasuk tindakan membela syariat yang mulia."\[2\] Definisi dari Sanad/Isnad sebagaimana yang disebutkan oleh Syaikh Mahmud at-Thahhan adalah: سلسلة الرجال الموصلة للمتن. "Silsilah para perawi yang menyambungkan (sanad) sampai ke teks hadis."\[3\] Contoh dari sanad, adalah seperti hadits berikut: قال الإمام أبو داود: حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا سفيان، عن عمرو بن دينار، عن أبي قابوس، عن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص يبلغ به النبي ﷺ قال: «الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ، ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ». "Imam Abu Dawud berkata: Telah menceritakan kepada kami Musaddad, telah menceritakan kepada kami Sufyan, dari 'Amr bin Dinar, dari Abu Qabus, dari 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'Ash, yang menyampaikannya sampai kepada Nabi ﷺ, beliau bersabda: "Orang-orang yang penyayang niscaya akan disayang oleh Yang Maha Penyayang. Sayangilah siapa pun yang ada di bumi, niscaya yang ada di langit akan menyayangi kalian."" (HR. Abu Dawud No. 4941) Skema dari sanad hadits ini kira-kira seperti yang terletak pada skema berikut ini: Imam Abu Dawud - Musaddad - Sufyan - 'Amr bin Dinar - Abu Qabus -'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'Ash - Nabi Muhammad ﷺ Ini merupakan contoh dari Isnad. Sanad merupakan suatu kekhususan bagi Islam, dan merupakan di antara suatu keistimewaannya dibandingkan dengan umat-umat terdahulu. Islam memiliki cara sendiri untuk mengecek keaslian atau kepalsuan dari suatu cerita atau suatu perkataan, entah berupa sabda Nabi ﷺ, atau perkataan para Salaf, sampai dengan kisah dan sejarah yang telah lampau. Oleh karenanya, dari sini para ulama begitu memperhatikan betapa pentingnya mengecek kevalidan dari suatu hadits melalui isnad-nya. Al-Imam Ibnul Mubarak berkata: الإسناد من الدين, ولو لا إسناد لقال شاء ما شاء. "Sanad adalah bagian dari agama. Seandainya tidak ada sanad, tentu siapa saja akan berkata apa saja yang dia kehendaki."\[4\] Al-Imam Sufyan Ats-Tsauri berkata: الإسناد سلاح المؤمن "Sanad adalah senjata orang mukmin."\[5\] Maksudnya adalah, Sanad merupakan alat bagi orang mukmin untuk mengecek keaslian suatu perkataan. Seorang mukmin sejati tidak akan jatuh ke dalam kebohongan apalagi mengatasnamakan keilmuan, maka ia menjadikan sanad sebagai senjatanya untuk mencari tahu kebenaran. Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal berkata: طلب الإسناد العالي سنّة عمن سلف. "Mencari sanad yang tinggi (tingkatan periwayatan yang dekat dengan sumber) merupakan sunnah dari para ulama pendahulu (ulama salaf)."\[6\] Hal ini sebagaimana yang dilakukan oleh sebagian Sahabat Nabi yang ingin mengetahui sabda-sabda Nabi ﷺ yang tidak ia ketahui. Seperti misalnya Abdullah Ibnu Mas’ud RA, beliau melakukan perjalanan jauh dari Kufah menuju Madinah untuk belajar dengan Umar bin Khaththab dan mendengar hadits darinya. Oleh sebab inilah para ulama menyebutkan bahwa mencari sanad yang ‘Aliy (dekat dengan sumber primer) merupakan suatu Sunnah Mustahabbah (perkara yang dicintai). Sebagian orang ada yang merasa bahwa dirinya atau kelompoknya merupakan kelompok yang paling bersanad, atau yang paling berhak atas suatu Isnad, sedangkan kelompok lain yang bertolak faham dengannya maka dengan mudahnya ia katakan mereka tidak bersanad. Di antara yang berpikir seperti ini adalah golongan penganut paham Islam Jamaah dari organisasi LDII (Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia). Mereka berpendapat bahwa satu-satunya sumber untuk mendapatkan ilmu secara sah adalah dengan cara manqul (menukil dari guru) dan tidak boleh memahami sendirian, dan harus dengan sanad yang Muttashil (bersambung) kepada Nabi ﷺ. Dan dalam keyakinan LDII, orang yang mempunyai kualitas mumpuni dalam ilmu agama dan keilmuannya mencapai derajat yang Muttashil adalah Haji Nur Hasan Ubaidah, yakni Imam pertama LDII, yang kemudian ia menurunkan ilmunya secara manqul kepada para murid-muridnya. Hal ini pula yang kemudian menjadi alasan mengapa mereka bersikap eksklusif dalam mengambil ilmu; mereka tidak mengambil ilmu kecuali dari kelompok/golongan mereka saja. Mereka enggan mengambil ilmu selain dari kelompok mereka. Ini semua dikarenakan keyakinan mereka bahwa ilmu yang pasti dengan sanad yang manqul hanya ada pada Imam/Amir mereka. Siapa yang mengambil ilmu di luar LDII maka keilmuannya tidak sah dan dihitung sebagai pendapat pribadi (ra’yu) saja.\[7\] Mereka melandaskan pemikiran mereka ini dengan berdalil melalui sabda Nabi ﷺ: مَنْ قَالَ فِي القُرْآنِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ “Barang siapa yang berkata tentang Al-Qur'an tanpa ilmu, maka hendaklah ia mempersiapkan tempat duduknya di neraka.” (HR. At-Tirmidzi) مَنْ قَالَ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ بِرَأْيِهِ فَأَصَابَ فَقَدْ أَخْطَأَ “Barang siapa yang berkata tentang Kitab Allah (Al-Qur'an) dengan menggunakan logikanya semata (tanpa dasar ilmu), meskipun perkataannya itu benar/tepat, maka ia tetap dinyatakan telah berbuat salah.'" (HR. Abu Dawud dan Tirmidzi) Ini merupakan sebuah penipuan besar-besaran terhadap umat Islam Indonesia.\[8\] Nur Hasan belajar ke Arab Saudi untuk mempelajari agama, lalu datang ke Indonesia dan menyatakan bahwa hanya sanadnya yang manqul, lalu mempertanyakan keislaman orang yang tidak belajar kepadanya. Sebuah paradoks sejarah yang menggelitik muncul ketika kita menelisik asal-usul otoritas epistemologis Nur Hasan Ubaidah. Ia mengklaim telah mengambil dan membawa sanad keilmuan langsung dari Makkah, Arab Saudi, sebuah wilayah yang dalam lanskap sosiologi agama kerap dilekati stigma peyoratif sebagai "negeri Wahabi". Namun, letak kejanggalan intelektualnya ada di sini: tidak ditemukan satu pun dokumen akademis maupun fatwa dari ulama otoritatif Kerajaan Arab Saudi yang memiliki corak pemikiran atau konklusi teologis yang sejalan dengan doktrin eksklusif yang diproklamasikan oleh Nur Hasan. Keganjilan ini memicu tanda tanya besar mengenai otentisitas dan distorsi pemaknaan sanad yang ia bawa pulang. Ironisme ini tidak berhenti pada fase romantisme masa lalu, melainkan terus direproduksi oleh LDII hingga hari ini. Organisasi tersebut secara konsisten menginvestasikan sumber dayanya untuk mengirimkan kader-kader muda mereka ke Ma’had al-Haram di Makkah dengan misi tunggal: menyambung kembali mata rantai sanad yang terputus. Di dalam diskursus internal mereka, terdapat sebuah pengakuan implisit (atau barangkali sebuah kecemasan kolektif) bahwa sanad yang dahulu dibawa oleh Nur Hasan Ubaidah telah mengalami desentralisasi, hilang, atau setidaknya tidak lagi utuh. Maka, terjadilah sebuah kontradiksi ideologis yang nyata. Di satu sisi, ada penolakan bawah sadar terhadap corak pemikiran eksternal, namun di sisi lain, mereka justru menggantungkan legitimasi spiritual tertingginya pada sumber ilmu yang berasal dari rahim domestik negeri yang mereka sebut "Wahabi" tersebut. Padahal, mempelajari agama dengan manqul dan musnad yang muttashil bukanlah suatu syarat mutlak dalam mempelajari suatu ilmu agama. Dalam menuntut ilmu, metode dengan mendengar langsung bukanlah suatu syarat yang mutlak. Bahkan para sahabat Nabi ﷺ, yang jelas-jelas bertemu dengan beliau dan hidup dengan beliau, masih perlu belajar pada sahabat lain yang mendengar hadits dari Nabi ﷺ, sebagaimana Abdullah Ibnu Mas’ud yang sudah kita nukilkan kisahnya pada bagian sebelumnya. Bahkan sahabat lainnya pun meriwayatkan suatu hadits berdasarkan pada shahifah-shahifah (lembaran-lembaran) yang diberikan oleh sahabat lainnya tanpa perlu mendengarkan langsung, banyak juga yang tidak meriwayatkan hadits Nabi ﷺ secara langsung atau mendengar dari sahabat lain. Imam Al-Khathib al-Baghdadi di dalam kitab Al-Kifayah fi ‘Ilm ar-Riwayah bahkan membuat suatu bab khusus yang berjudul: باب ذكر الرواية عمن قال: يجب البيان عن السمع كيف كان. "Bab penyebutan riwayat dari orang yang berpendapat: Wajib hukumnya menjelaskan tentang bagaimana cara pendengaran apapun yang terjadi."\[9\] Beliau menyebutkan bahwa di antara orang-orang terdahulu ada yang meriwayatkan bukan dari pendengaran (sama’an) atau ijazah (izin meriwayatkan hadits). Di antaranya beliau menyebutkan hadits: أَخْبَرَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ الفَقِيهُ النَّجَّادُ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الفَرْوِيُّ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ وَجَدَ فِي قَائِمِ سَيْفِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ صَحِيفَةً فِيهَا: لَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسٍ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ صَدَقَةٌ، فَإِذَا كَانَتْ خَمْسًا فَفِيهَا شَاةٌ، وَفِي عَشْرٍ شَاتَانِ، وَفِي خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ ثَلَاثُ شِيَاهٍ، وَفِي عِشْرِينَ أَرْبَعُ شِيَاهٍ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ خَمْسًا وَعِشْرِينَ فَفِيهَا بِنْتُ مَخَاضٍ، وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ. "Telah mengabarkan kepada kami Hasan bin Abi Bakar bin Syadzan, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ahmad bin Salman Al-Faqih An-Najjad, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ismail bin Ishaq, telah menceritakan kepada kami Ishaq bin Muhammad Al-Farwi, telah menceritakan kepada kami 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, dari Nafi', dari Ibnu 'Umar, bahwasanya ia menemukan sebuah lembaran catatan (shahifah) di dalam gagang pedang Umar bin Khattab radhiyallahu 'anhu yang di dalamnya tertulis: 'Tidak ada kewajiban zakat pada unta yang kurang dari lima ekor. Apabila telah mencapai lima ekor, maka zakatnya adalah satu ekor kambing. Pada sepuluh ekor unta, zakatnya dua ekor kambing. Pada lima belas ekor unta, zakatnya tiga ekor kambing. Pada dua puluh ekor unta, zakatnya empat ekor kambing. Dan apabila telah mencapai dua puluh lima ekor unta, maka zakatnya adalah satu ekor bintu makhadh (unta betina berumur masuk tahun kedua)...', dan perawi menyebutkan kelanjutan hadis ini secara panjang lebar."\[10\] Riwayat ini dikeluarkan oleh Imam Al-Daraqutni dalam kitab Sunan Al-Daraqutni (Kitab Zakat) dan juga diriwayatkan oleh Imam Al-Baihaqi dalam Al-Sunan Al-Kubra. Riwayat ini memuat naskah tertulis (shahifah) mengenai aturan zakat yang berasal dari peninggalan Khalifah Umar bin Khattab. Lalu dalam perkembangan Ulumul Hadits, bukan hanya sahabat saja yang menerima riwayat secara tidak langsung, tapi juga ulama-ulama yang hidup setelah mereka juga banyak meriwayatkan dari kitab/lembaran-lembaran hadits yang tidak ia dengar langsung dari penulisnya, tidak pula lewat ijazah atau munawwalah. Metode ini kemudian dalam ilmu hadits dikenal sebagai wijadah, dan metodologi ini bertolak belakang dengan metode manqul. Sebagai contoh, terdapat hadits yang diriwayatkan oleh ad-Darimi berikut: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ الحِمْصِيُّ، عَنِ المُغِيرَةِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ التَّمِيمِيِّ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَيُّ خَلْقٍ أَعْجَبُ إِلَيْكُمْ إِيمَانًا؟» قَالُوا: المَلَائِكَةُ، قَالَ: «وَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ، وَهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ؟» قَالُوا: فَالنَّبِيُّونَ، قَالَ: «وَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ، وَالْوَحْيُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِمْ؟» قَالُوا: فَنَحْنُ، قَالَ: «وَمَا لَكُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ، وَأَنَا بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ؟» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَلَا إِنَّ أَعْجَبَ الْخَلْقِ إِلَيَّ إِيمَانًا لَقَوْمٌ يَكُونُونَ مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ، يَجْدُونُ صُحُفًا فِيهَا كُتُبٌ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَا فِيهَا». "Telah menceritakan kepada kami Ismail bin 'Ayyasy Al-Himshi, dari Al-Mughirah bin Qais At-Tamimi, dari 'Amru bin Syu'aib, dari ayahnya, dari kakeknya (Abdullah bin 'Amru bin al-'Ash), ia berkata: Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: 'Iman makhluk siapakah yang paling menakjubkan menurut kalian?' Para sahabat menjawab: 'Malaikat.' Beliau bersabda: 'Bagaimana mereka tidak beriman, sedangkan mereka berada di sisi Rabb mereka 'Azza wa Jalla?' Para sahabat berkata: 'Kalau begitu, para nabi.' Beliau bersabda: 'Bagaimana mereka tidak beriman, sedangkan wahyu turun langsung kepada mereka?' Para sahabat berkata: 'Kalau begitu, kami (para sahabat).' Beliau bersabda: 'Bagaimana kalian tidak beriman, sedangkan aku berada di tengah-tengah kalian?' Kemudian Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: 'Ketahuilah, sesungguhnya makhluk yang paling menakjubkan imannya menurutku adalah suatu kaum yang hidup setelah kalian; mereka mendapati lembaran-lembaran (mushaf) yang berisi kitab (al-Qur'an dan hadis), lalu mereka beriman kepada apa yang ada di dalamnya.'" Ibnu Katsir berkata: وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ فِيهِ دَلَالَةٌ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ بِالْوِجَادَةِ الَّتِي اخْتَلَفَ فِيهَا أَهْلُ الْحَدِيثِ "Dan hadis ini di dalamnya terdapat dalil (hujjah) atas bolehnya beramal dengan wijadah yang mana hal ini diperselisihkan di antara para ahli hadis."\[11\] Salah satu ulama besar dari kalangan Syafi’iyah yang cukup dikenal, yakni al-Imam as-Suyuthi, penulis dari kitab-kitab terkenal seperti Tafsīr al-Jalālayn atau Al-Itqan fi Ulumil Qur’an, beliau berkata dalam salah satu kitab beliau yaitu Tadrib ar-Rawi fi Syarh Taqrib an-Nawawi, beliau mengatakan: قال ابن برهان في أوسط ذهب الفقهاء كافة إلى أنه لا يتوقف العمل بالحديث على سماعه بل إذا صح عنده النسخة جاز له العمل بها وإن لم يسمع, وحكى الأستاذ أبو الإسحاق الإسفرياني الإجماع على جواز النقل من الكتب المعتمدة ولا يشترط اتصال السند إلى مصنفها وذلك شامل لكتاب الأحاديث والفقه, وقال الطبري من وجد حديثا في كتاب صحيح جاز له أن يرويه ويحتج به. "Ibnu Burhan berkata dalam kitab Al-Awsath: Seluruh ahli fikih berpendapat bahwa pengamalan suatu hadis tidak bergantung pada proses mendengarnya secara langsung, melainkan jika suatu salinan kitab telah sahih di sisinya, maka ia boleh mengamalkannya meskipun ia tidak mendengarnya secara langsung. Dan Al-Ustadz Abu Ishaq Al-Isfiryani menukil adanya ijmak (kesepakatan ulama) mengenai kebolehan menukil dari kitab-kitb yang tepercaya, dan tidak disyaratkan adanya ketersambungan sanad hingga ke penulisnya, dan hal ini mencakup kitab-kitab hadis maupun fikih. Dan Ath-Thabari berkata: Barangsiapa yang menemukan suatu hadis di dalam kitab yang sahih, maka ia boleh meriwayatkannya dan menjadikannya sebagai hujah."\[12\] Dari keterangan beberapa ulama dan pakar ilmu hadits sebagaimana yang telah dijelaskan di atas, jelaslah bahwa manqul dengan musnad yang muttashil bukanlah suatu keharusan dan bukan satu-satunya cara dalam mendapatkan ilmu-ilmu Islam. Adapun mengenai pendalilan mereka dengan hadits riwayat Tirmidzi yang menjadi landasan pemikiran mereka, maka kita pun berdalil dengan perkataan Abi Tayyib Muhammad Syamsul Haqq dalam kitab syarah Sunan Abi Daud-nya yang berjudul ‘Aun al-Ma’bud: قال السيوطي قال البيهقي إن صح أراد والله أعلم الرأي الذي يغلب على القلب من عبر دليل قام عليه وأما الذي يشده برهان فالقوب به جائز. "As-Suyuthi berkata, Al-Baihaqi berkata: Jika riwayat ini sahih, wallahu a'lam yang dimaksud adalah pendapat yang condong di dalam hati tanpa adanya dalil yang mendasarinya. Adapun pendapat berdasarkan ra’yi yang diperkuat oleh burhan (bukti/argumen yang kuat), maka berpendapat dengannya adalah hal yang diperbolehkan."\[13\] Dapat disimpulkan bahwa makna dari kedua hadits yang menjadi landasan LDII di atas adalah larangan mensyarah hadits hanya dengan akal pikirannya saja tanpa adanya penjelasan pendukung dari hadits yang marfu’ dan mauquf, atau tanpa meneliti perkataan para ulama dan tidak sesuai dengan kaidah syar’iyyah. Itulah yang dibahas dalam kedua hadits tadi. Adapun LDII memahami hadits di atas sebagai larangan mutlak untuk mengambil ilmu selain dari golongan mereka.
